What is this place?!

This is the online home of designer, videographer, editor, writer and ponderer Jonny Clooney.

He resides in Bristol in the UK, is a member of creative collective Xynthetic, and loves cake and tea.

Busy day, busy month!

Just got home from a long day.  Left the flat at 8:30 this morning to do a days work at Aardman alongside best mate Gavin Strange, then we both headed out to Bristol’s waterside and suspension bridge to get more footage for the forthcoming fixie film.  finally got back home and straight in the shower to recover from the days trudging!!  Can’t wait to unleash

Later this month I’m headed back to my home town of Coalville in Leicestershire.  House sitting in fact for my Ma.  While I’m back though I’ve got a bit of filming planned for various personal projects, so look out for those in the coming weeks.

Just been having my Sunday browse of Vimeo and came across this.  Love it.

This is the very first project by Groningen based arts duo DocterSterkenburg. Christiaan Docter is a filmcomposer and Jonathan Sterkenburg is a cinematographer. This very first project is a tribute to the city of Groningen, Netherlands.

BBC - Whaling and Wildlife

Another of the videos I edited for the BBC’s Frozen Planet extra web content.

For over 60 years South Georgia meant whaling and over 175,000 dead whales were processed on the island. The largest whale ever caught was landed here. A 33.58 metre long blue whale, it was larger than a dinosaur.

The whaling station closed in 1965 and Simon Nash looks at whether the island’s wildlife has now reclaimed the seas where this industry once took place.

BBC - The Whalers Unwanted Gift

More of the work I edited for the BBC’s Frozen Planet web content.

Simon Nash is visiting the Antarctic Island of South Georgia, once one of the most important whaling sites on the planet. Now the whaling stations stand abandoned and decaying as the island’s wildlife reclaims them. But the Norwegian whalers who worked here left behind unusual and unwanted gifts.

This film was directed by Adam Berg to help promote Philips CINEMA 21:9 Television.  Based around a frozen moment it features a shootout between cops and clowns in a hospital.  Amazing work.  I saw this online a while ago, but just had to share it now for those that hadn’t seen yet.  You can see clearer versions of the video and a behind the scenes film here.

Based on a canvas I’m still working on, this is a video showing the use on TonePad for the iPhone to try and create an image with sound. Unfortunately the 16 x 16 matrix of the program is a bit stifling when trying to create the Xynthetic logo, ideally I would have liked at least a 30 x 30 grid. But you get the idea I reckon. And the logo once finished is A LOT easier to make out if you squint a bit!

The latest Xynthetic show opened tonight at the home of Morph and Wallace & Gromit, Aardman Studios.  Hosted in the buildings atrium some of the work has featured previously at the Northern Exposure exhibition in Glasgow during April.  However there were new pieces by JamFactory, Richt, China Mike, Black Cloud and even a perspex engraving by Pone!  My ‘Northern Exposure’ edit also appeared via a 50” plasma!  Which was nice.  I got a few bits of footage while I was there, so will likely hammer together a little edit, you know, with nails and wood and stuff!

On April 10th 2009 the Recoat Gallery in Glasgow hosted Xynthetic’s first group show north of the border. Four members of the collective traveled from Bristol to Glasgow to meet up with Klingatron to attend the show. Including artwork from Jam Factory, Waste, Pone, Klingatron, China Mike, Richt, 45RPM, Sums, Mr Jago, Wheatfree and Makinov. This film follows the journey from the south to the north and the opening night of the show.

You can see the film in HD here.

Last night I built a bike for the first time in about 7 years.  I used to be a cycle supervisor at a well known UK chain store and built bikes daily.  I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed putting a bike together.  Sadly, I can’t say this is my bike, as I was enlisted to build it for my best friend Gavin Strange AKA Jam Factory. Even so it’s gotten me sufficiently enthused to go and finally sort my own bike out.  Pics when it’s ready!
